Brandon fully recovered; started racing again, and then purchased a Honda CBR 954rr Street Bike in March of 2002. At the end of 2002 he decided construction just wasn’t where he saw his future, so he started waiting tables and enrolled at the University of Louisville to figure out what he wanted to do. That summer of 2003, he attended his first track day at Putnam Park (crashed in turn 2 ha!) and fell in love with road racing. In August 2003 his manager at the Steakhouse found out his dad owned a construction company. He got excited and wanted Brandon to set up a meeting with him and his dad. Brandon said “for what?” He said, “I sell supplemental insurance and would like to talk to him about offering it to his employees.” Brandon asked him how it worked, thought to himself, "hey I know a lot of businesses I could talk to and it sounds simple enough, and it might be something I could do to make better money while in school instead of waiting tables." So Brandon asked him how he could start selling this insurance. Brandon then gave him his resume so he could pass it on to get an interview. He later learned that his manager never turned in his resume because he was upset that he wouldn’t set up a meeting for him with his dad’s company and he thought Brandon was too young; at the age of 20. That did not stop Brandon, he went to the insurance company’s website, submitted a request that he was interested in selling their insurance, had two interviews, got licensed with the Kentucky Department of Insurance and started training. It was two weeks into the business and Brandon opened his first account! It was then that he realized this is where his future was, working for himself. About three months into selling insurance, Brandon had enough accounts opened up to be financially stable to stop waiting tables at night and on the weekends. Brandon continued to grow his insurance business, and he decided he was going to start racing street bikes for fun. He had his first full season of street bike racing in 2004 and won 11 National Championships between the WERA and CCS Roadracing series. With those accomplishments he received a lot of sponsorship support for 2005. Meanwhile, throughout that season Brandon was building his insurance business with local companies, implementing employee benefit programs, and hitting all of his sales goals winning awards and trips. This career worked great because he was his own boss, and could take off for races while still communicating with clients and maintaining his accounts when he was traveling. In the winter of 2004/2005 he continued to open accounts while preparing for his second season of road racing, first season in the expert class, to compete in the Formula USA series. In first quarter of 2005 the insurance company he was selling for was preparing for their 50th anniversary. They were having a contest for each state for the sales associate that could open the most accounts from February to April. Whoever won would win a trip to the Headquarters to meet the corporate executives and get wined and dined. Brandon thought of this as a great opportunity to try to win this contest and go rub elbows with the president of the company where he could possibly talk about his racing program and gain some monetary support. Brandon ended up winning the contest with eleven new accounts and in May he was scheduled to go to headquarters. That May he also got his American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Pro license and raced two AMA Pro Supersport rounds and finished 17th in both races. For 2006 Brandon decided that he needed to find his own way to fund his racing efforts without relying on outside sponsorships or credit cards. Brandon put a business plan together to advertise on his race bikes that he sells insurance, to leverage new business opportunities with companies in the motorcycle industry. His plan was aimed at contacting dealerships in each city that he traveled to for racing, set up meetings with the dealerships the day before the race, and the day after the race, and try to open up more accounts. In the meantime Brandon started getting a lot of request from racers at the track if he could offer them major medical health insurance. Some complaints he was getting was that their insurance didn’t cover racing, they were scared to ask their insurance company if it covered racing, or they didn’t even have insurance at all! Brandon saw an opportunity to provide and excellent service to the industry, so he researched all the insurance companies in a few states and found out a lot of them had exclusions for motorcycle riding let alone racing, and a few of them did not have any exclusions whether it was your hobby or occupation. Brandon then started to get appointed with these companies to offer their insurance and started signing up his friends and fellow racers all over the country. In April of 2007, Brandon secured this domain, RiderSurance.com, to host this site where action sports athletes could sign up for insurance online to make it as easy as possible to get information, get questions answered and apply for coverage knowing that you are 100% covered if you race or ride. In June of 2007, the site went live and Brandon started gaining more clients from promoting through message boards and referrals. In February 2008, Brandon took the next step and got licensed in all 50 states. Brandon started advertising at races, setting up vendor booths, placing banner ads on websites and message boards, and that is most likely what brought you here today. So please hang out, get educated, run a some quotes, and contact us if you have any questions. Thanks for your time, and ride safe!
