Disability Insurance, often called DI or disability income insurance, is a form of insurance that insures the beneficiary's earned income against the risk that a disability creates a barrier for a worker to complete the core functions of their work.

For example, say you were to get break your leg racing motocross and you worked as a mechanic for a living.  Obviously it would be hard to perform the daily requirements of a mechanic, so there is a high chance that you would not be able to work. On top of that bad news your employer most likely is not going to pay you your paycheck for the entire time you are off work.

Therefore disability insurance is purchased to help protect your income if you are hurt or sick and cannot work.
